From the award-winning Irish writer of Swansong: Story of Occi Byrne, MY WIFE, is set to have its world premiere at Playhouse East in Hackney from 27 November 2025, starring Annie Shapero, Nicholas Denton and Mark Gillis.
Set in East London circa 1950, MY WIFE is a darkly comic tale, where an ordinary night takes a wildly unexpected turn. MY WIFE hurtles through two locations and one unforgettable night of escalating missteps where a twisted blend of desperation, betrayal and absurdity takes centre stage.
With echoes of Martin McDonagh’s wit, the chaotic energy of the Coen Brothers’ Fargo, and the wild tone of Pedro Almodóvar’s Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, MY WIFE will be playing from 27 November - 6 December 2025 at Payhouse East.
Located in the heart of Dalston, Playhouse East is East London’s best alternative theatre venue — a vibrant hub for bold, original, and independent performance. Dedicated to championing new voices and innovative storytelling, the venue continues to establish itself as one of London’s most exciting spaces for emerging and experimental work.
This fast-paced three-hander packed with razor-sharp dialogue and offbeat humour is the latest piece of writing from critically acclaimed Irish actor, writer, director Conor McDermottroe, who is known for his debut feature Swansong: Story of Occi Byrne, which earned six IFTA nominations, and his comedy Halal Daddy. McDermottroe excels at blending personal storytelling with strong social themes.
The impressive cast includes Annie Shapero (HBO’s House of Dragon 3, Stan’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North, Saccharine and FX’s The Boarder), Nicholas Denton (AMC’s The Talamasca, Dangerous Liaisons), and Mark Gillis (Netflix’s Eric, Member of the Royal Shakespeare Company).
Directed by the brilliant Bellaray Bertrand -Webb, costume design by Francesca Bampton and Madeline Foley, composition by Cameron McArthur ( Bad Behaviour), and lighting design by Brett Kasza.
The play is being produced by Nicholas Denton under his production company Whateverville, in association with Monique Fisher under her production company Around the Moon Productions.
